Madrid awesome tourist attraction. Theatre Night

Turismo Madrid

Madrid is Spain’s theatre capital. Proof of this is the Noche de los Teatros (Night of Theatres), organized by the Regional Government which takes place every year as a welcome ceremony to Spring in the Spanish capital. This year’s edition pays homage to the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare and Cervantes’ deaths. Tonight, April 1st, visitors and local theatre fans will have a hard time choosing an event from the ample program which starts at 5.30 p.m. at the Puerta del Sol. But theatre is not a once-a-year-happening in Madrid. Despite the economic recession and the perennial problems which have burdened this artistic and entertainment genre since time immemorial, theatre in Madrid remains alive and varied. The Gran Via and its vicinity is the capital’s haven for musicals and commercial ventures. The musical Lion King, supervised by its Broadway director Julie Taymor, is a huge box office hit, but there are other less flashy options to be enjoyed. A myriad of off-Madrid small venues leave room for riskier and less conventional enterprises. In between, the State Theatres which are subsidized by public funding provide the possibility of enjoying classics from the Spanish and International repertoire. The Centro Dramático Nacional (National Theatre), the Teatro Español and Matadero (City Hall theatres), the Teatros del Canal (run by the Regional Government) and the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico (a Ministry of Culture outfit) host plays by the aforementioned classics and also by contemporary Spanish playwrights and authors from all over the world. Theatre lovers are thus assured quite an eclectic experience. All venues are extremely user friendly. Aside from the contents on stage, there are also architectural wonders to be enjoyed such as the Madrid Opera headquarters, the Teatro Real. The proper atmosphere is guaranteed. Prices are affordable and discounts can be found. There is no excuse to visit Madrid and ignore the city’s performing arts attractions. We are sure that if you give it a try, you won’t regret it.
