AND THE ROYAL CONVENTS
This private Tour by a licensed guide of Madrid Museum Tours will begin with a Private Tour to the Monastery of the Royal Barefoot Nuns (Convento de las Descalzas Reales) founded by Juana de Austria, daughter of emperor Charles 5th and who almost became the only Jesuit nun of her time.
Doña Juana donated this imposing Renaissance Palace to the Poor Clare Franciscans Cloistered Nuns who, after nearly 500 years, continue to live and maintain it. This Royal Convent also won the 1987 Prize of Best European Community Museum. Its main attraction are the ten 17th century Flemish tapestries based on the sacrament of the Eucharist, whose cartoons were the work of the great painter Peter Paul Rubens.
This private tour will also visit the Royal Monastery of the Incarnation sponsored by the Habsburg kings Philip III and his wife Margaret of Austria and Styria who donated the building to the Augustinian cloistered nuns who, in number of 14, today continue with its maintenance. Its main attraction is the Hall of Relics, and the Counter Reformation atmosphere which prevails in every corner of this unusual gallery and convent.
